Last weekend, our office hosted the FLW College Fishing Southeastern Conference on Saturday May 17th. Over 100 anglers from fifty different universities/teams competed in this one day tournament held at Civitan Park in Guntersville.
The University of Georgia team of Byron Kenney of Griffin, GA., and Will Treadwell of Buford, GA., won the tournament with five bass weighing 26 pounds, 15 ounces. The win earned the club $2,000 and a spot in the FLW College Fishing Southeastern Conference Invitational tournament. Kenney and Treadwell said they targeted ledges, fishing deep with a jig and a deep-diving crankbait. They also estimated that they caught between 60-80 fish throughout the day, with 30 of them weighing more than four pounds.
The top 15 teams advancing to the Southeastern Conference Invitational tournament all weighed five fish over 18 pounds, a true testament to the popularity and renown of anglers to fish Lake Guntersville. The top 15 teams include the University of Georgia, University of Alabama, Birmingham Southern University, Mississippi State University, University of South Carolina, Auburn University, Bethel University, Auburn University-Montgomery, Seminole State College, Tennessee Tech University, Auburn University, North Alabama University, Columbus State University, North Carolina State University, and Florida Gulf Coast University. The top 15 teams from each regular season tournament will qualify for one of five conference invitational tournaments. The Southeastern Conference Invitational will be held October 18-19 at Lake Chickamauga in Hixon, Tenn. The top 10 teams from each conference invitational tournament will advance to the 2015 FLW College Fishing National Championship.
College Fishing is free to enter. All participants must be registered, full-time undergraduate students at a four-year college or university and members of a fishing club recognized by their college or university.
